How to share a household budget without linking bank accounts

You can plan household spending together without giving a budgeting app access to your bank accounts. The practical requirement is a shared record that both people understand and keep up to date.

Decide what belongs in the shared budget

Start with the expenses you both want to track: groceries, household bills, meals out or a trip. Agree whether personal purchases belong there too. A shared budget does not require recording every part of each person’s financial life.

Use a small set of groups you can recognize quickly. For example, put groceries and utilities in Living Expenses, and restaurant visits in Fun Spending. Categories add detail inside those groups.

Agree who records each transaction

A simple rule is that the person who makes a purchase records it. Add a short note when the amount alone would be unclear. Agree how to handle purchases that cover both shared and personal items, so you do not record the same spending twice.

Manual tracking takes a little ongoing effort. If you miss a purchase, add it when you notice it rather than assuming the available amount already includes it.

Make one short check-in part of your week

Look at what remains in each budget, check for missing transactions and discuss upcoming expenses. Use the numbers to make your next decision together. A recorded budget is only as complete as the spending you have entered.

Understand what “no bank linking” means

It means you enter transactions yourself rather than authorizing access to bank accounts. It does not mean your shared records stay only on your device. A shared app may store account and household information in cloud services so members can see the same records.

How FlowCap fits

FlowCap is a manual household budgeting app for iPhone and iPad. Create monthly or annual group budgets, record transactions and see available amounts together. You choose what to record; FlowCap does not request banking credentials or connect to your bank.

Recorded household data synchronizes through FlowCap’s cloud services. Read the Privacy Policy before deciding whether it fits your household. New transactions can be captured offline after online setup; editing or deleting existing transactions requires an online connection.
