FlowCap budgeting guide
How to track spending together as a couple
Tracking spending together works best when both people know what to record and how the information will be used. Start with a routine you can maintain, then add detail only when it helps you make decisions.
Choose the scope together
Decide whether your shared view covers household expenses only or also includes personal spending. Discuss which notes and categories are useful to share. Keep the agreement explicit so neither person has to guess what the other expects.
Start with a few recognizable groups
Groceries and bills might sit in Living Expenses, dining out in Fun Spending, and trips in Travel. Keep categories clear enough that either partner can record a purchase without asking where it belongs.
If you repeatedly disagree about a category, simplify it. Consistent records are more useful than an elaborate category system that only one person understands.
Record each purchase once
Agree that the person making a purchase records the transaction. If you both see a receipt, check the existing history before adding it again. Use notes for purchases that need context, such as supplies for a shared dinner.
Recording shared spending is different from calculating who owes whom. If you need repayment or bill-splitting tools, assess those requirements separately; FlowCap does not calculate settlements between partners.
Check what remains before your next decision
For example, if your fictional household has $80 remaining in its dining-out budget, you can discuss whether to use it for one meal or spread it over the rest of the month. The number gives you a common reference; you still decide what works for you.
Review together once a week
Check for missing or duplicate transactions, look at upcoming expenses and discuss any changes to the plan. Keep the conversation focused on the shared record and the next decision, rather than expecting the app to make the decision for you.
How FlowCap fits
Each member signs in with their own Apple or Google account. Invitations require explicit acceptance. One household subscription covers up to six members, including the owner, so an invited partner does not need a separate subscription.
FlowCap synchronizes recorded household data through its cloud services. It supports shared budgets, manual transactions, spending reports and recurring expense schedules, without a bank connection.
